HIV: Human Immunodeficiency Virus

  • It is a tiny virus like the “flu” or the common cold
  • The virus hides in the ] immune system
  • It then damages the immune system
  • HIV infection can lead to AIDS

The average Harlem resident is 6 times more likely to receive a new HIV diagnosis than another person in the United States.

AIDS: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome

  • Occurs during the final stage of HIV infection
  • People at this stage of HIV disease are vulnerable to infections
  • Very low amount of T-cells in the blood
  • Medical intervention and treatment are required to prevent death.

The spread of HIV/AIDS

  • Lives and reproduces in blood and other fluids in the body
  • Spread through transmission of these bodily fluids from one person to another
  • Transmitted through sexual contact, sharing needles, or occupational exposure

HIV/AIDS is found in…

  • Blood
  • Semen
  • Breast Milk
  • Vaginal Fluids
  • Rectal Mucous

HIV/AIDS is not transmitted in…

  • Tears
  • Saliva
  • Urine
  • Sweat

Prevent your exposure:

  • Abstain from sexual intercourse
  • Wear a condom
  • Don’t share needles
